This is my final good bye to you Singapore. My home away from home for the last 7 years or so. Without a doubt you will always hold a special place in my heart. I am going to miss you lah.
Where else can you find Bak Kut Teh, Spicy Fish Head Curry Soup or Green Curry Chicken served steaming hot in non-airconditioned hawker centers with people eating in the middle of the day in sweltering tropical heat dressed to the nines.
I could never understand the appeal of your Carrot Cakes until now. But oh, Popiah, well that is something else! And dear Laksa, I have grown to love you over the years, when at first I really found you unappealing.
How I found it so odd that Chicken Rice, unequivocally the dish that is truly Singapore, should be served cold. Well, at least, one of the locals schooled me (politely, of course) when I complained about it.
Perhaps my fave will always be the Hokkien Mee. Anytime, anywhere loh uncle/auntie.
You taught me how there are other drinks besides Coke mah. So over time I have gone fond of Barley Water, Hot Teh O, Sugarcane Juice, or Iced Water Chestnut.
Boarding trains and stepping up on buses were always one of my favorite times of the day. It just works. A time to immerse yourself with all the people from all walks of life, or lose yourself tapping away on your smartphone screen that you already missed your stop 3 stations away.
